Identifying the location of a leak as soon as you notice it will ensure that moisture-related damage is kept to a minimum – keeping costs down and protecting your property. This is easier said than done, though, as homeowners often don’t spot leaks until damp patches start to form on their ceilings! To start with, damp patches only affect your paintwork, so it’s still important to identify the location of the leak quickly to avoid the damage escalating. To help you find the leak quickly and easily within your home, here are some simple tips.

Quick tips for identifying a leaky roofWait for it to rain

The quickest way to find a leak is to wait for it to rain, as the water will highlight the source of the opening in your roof. You could also use a hose to pour small amounts of water onto the roof while you search for the leak. If you have a loft, head to it with a torch. Don’t be put off by the location of the damp patch on your ceiling – this signifies the location of the damage rather than the source of the leak. Take your torch up into the loft and shine it along the walls and ceiling. If there’s a wall or an area that’s particularly wet, focus in on it, as you’ll be getting close to the leak. You should be able to spot wet walls easily, as the light of the torch will reflect the water. Once you have identified the source of the leak, make a mark on it or circle it (remembering to use a waterproof pen so that it doesn’t wash off!).

Still can’t find the leak?

Sometimes, it’s not possible to locate a leak in the way outlined above. If that’s the case, not to worry – there are some other common sources of leaks that you can check, including ridge caps, flashing, gaskets, shingles, dormer valleys, gutters and drainpipes.

Repair the roof

Once you know where the water is getting in, you can fix it. If you want to take a DIY approach, then you will need somebody to tap on the mark in the loft while you’re on the roof, so that you can identify what needs to be repaired or replaced. It’s often easier and more effective to hire a professional roofer for the job, as they will be able to rectify the issue quickly and efficiently – putting your mind at ease that your roof is waterproof again.
