Chimney leaks should never be ignored, or they could cause serious problems for your property and cost you more later on. For example, if the chimney stack deteriorates further and becomes unstable, it may crumble or fall during stormy weather, which is very dangerous for anyone nearby.

An ineffective chimney can also become a health hazard inside the home too, especially in active fireplaces where smoke must leave through the flue and chimney.

What’s causing your chimney leak?

Chimney leaks start when water is able to enter the home or roof through various channels. One of the main pathways for rain to come directly through the chimney flue is when the cap is missing, or the crown at the head of the chimney has cracked or broken. This results in little protection from rain and snow entering your property.

Another rainwater entry point is through damaged flashing around the chimney stack base. If the flashing seals have started to deteriorate over time, it may have left gaps in the brickwork, allowing water to penetrate your roofing.

Small cracks in the mortar between chimney stack bricks can also lead to water ingress. The problem will often get worse during the colder months of the year. If rainwater expands in freezing temperatures when it solidifies to ice, it can make any existing cracks much worse, affecting the stability of the chimney stack.
