What to do if your roof leaks this winter

As we enter the coldest months of the year, the sudden temperature changes and harsh weather conditions can play havoc with our rooflines. From storm-damaged roof tiles to crumbling chimney stacks, there are many issues that can crop up, but what about roof leaks?

Here’s what you need to do if your roof starts leaking this winter.

Identify roof leaks

The first step to resolving any roof leak issue is to spot the problem and work out the cause. Roof leaks often show themselves through watermarks on ceilings and walls, but you should look for other signs to help you identify where the issue is happening. For example, if you look along your roofline, can you see your gutters overflowing? They may be blocked, causing a backup of water.

Many people notice a leak after a storm, as elements such as heavy rainfall, strong winds, hailstones and icy conditions can exacerbate existing issues not spotted during the year. Catching problems early is key, so don’t sit on winter roof leaks if you see them.

Call a qualified roofer

While we never recommend DIY roof repairs, it’s even more important to consider the dangers during winter. At this time of year, surfaces can be extra slippery, making it more hazardous to try and find out what’s going on with your roof materials.

Always call a qualified roofer to inspect your roof leak. They can assess the damage, identify the cause and recommend the best way to rectify the concern. Some repairs may need to wait until conditions are safer, but if winter roof work is required, they can do whatever it takes to secure your roofing and stop the leak from getting worse.

Schedule another roof inspection in the spring

For example, if your leaks are down to too much condensation forming in your attic or loft, you may have noticed mildew and rot remaining in this area. In these cases, your roof ventilation and insulation may need inspecting to see if further repairs or upgrades are required.
